Highlights from the Inaugural DBio Wellness & Selfcare Summit 2024

A Transformative 2-Day Experience

Introduction:

The DBio Wellness & Selfcare Summit 2024, held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, on September 17th and 18th, was an impactful two-day event that brought together experts, brands, and stakeholders in the wellness and self-care industry. Convened by Dr. Monica Hemben Eimunjeze, CEO & Co-Founder of DBio Wellness & Selfcare and Deedoo Bio Plus Pharmacare Ltd, the summit aimed to elevate health literacy, empower individuals, and promote self-care as a key pillar for universal health coverage and overall well-being.

This initiative highlighted the crucial role of self-care in reducing the pressure on traditional healthcare systems, aligning with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) definition of health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.

Advancing Wellness & Selfcare: Prospects & Perspectives

This opening panel, titled “Advancing Wellness & Selfcare: Prospects & Perspectives”, delved into the importance of health literacy in empowering individuals to take charge of their well-being. Key discussions included strategies to improve health literacy, the role of education in promoting effective self-care, and how individuals can make informed health decisions.

This insightful session set the stage for the summit, addressing the broader implications of wellness in today’s society.

Keynote Address

The keynote address by Dr. Leo C. Egbujiobi, a Medical Interventional Cardiologist and President of Medical Staff at Hendricks Family Hospital, USA, titled

“Advancing Wellness & Selfcare: Prospects & Perspectives,” provided profound insights into the future of wellness and self-care. Dr. Egbujiobi emphasized the importance of integrating self-care into mainstream healthcare practices, highlighting how individuals can take charge of their well-being to reduce the burden on traditional healthcare systems.

His talk delved into the benefits of self-care for both physical and mental health, the role of preventive measures, and how wellness practices can be leveraged to achieve universal health coverage. Watch the full keynote for an inspiring exploration of the transformative potential of self-care.

He started by defining “Empowerment as the ability of an individual to acquire skills, knowledge and to make proper decisions for their lives”. He further emphasized the need for empowerment of selves by Healthcare Practitioners in order to have a common language that unifies health literacy among Nigerians.

He then mentioned factors affecting selfcare which include  technology, mental wellbeing enhancement, artificial intelligence, digital health as well as online platforms stating their importance and perspectives ranging from Prevention, Treatment Adherence, Disease Management, Patient Empowerment, and the need to embrace a holistic approach.

Selfcare as a Driver of Universal Health Coverage (UHC)

The next major session focused on Selfcare as a Driver of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), exploring how wellness and self-care practices can alleviate the burden on traditional healthcare systems.

The panel addressed the economic and health benefits of self-care as a preventive measure.

Led by the summit convener, Dr. Monica Hemben Eimunjeze, this session featured panelists including Lilian Arigbodi, Managing Director of Lilian Collins Ltd, and Air Commodore David Babalola, Deputy Director of Doctrinal Development at the Air Warfare Centre, Abuja and Dr. (Mrs.) Bolanle Deji-Okubanjo– Integrative Oncologist.

They highlighted the intersection between personal responsibility in health management and the role of governments in promoting self-care to achieve UHC.

This session also featured an interactive segment, allowing attendees to engage directly with the digital platform designed to empower self-care brands.
